February 21st - Tryouts

Want to skate with the Sac City Rollers? Of course you do!

On February 21st, we will be holding the first tryouts of the year. Please read the tryouts page for an overview of what we'll be asking of you, what to bring with you, and if you have questions about how to get started, email our Recruitment Coordinator for details.

The cost for tryouts is $10, but if you attended our Feb 7th Boot Camp, there will be no additional cost to you. Money received goes to the rental of the rink and to cover the cost of printing new skater information packets.

How is what we do like what was presented in "Whip It"?

We embrace the do-it-yourself spirit, the wild clothes, the catchy nicknames, and the hard work and dedication to play our best, no matter how tough the opposition. You'll wind up spending a lot of time with your "Derby Sisters" and over time they'll become a second family.

How does it differ?

While there is a lot of hard-hitting action, fighting and hitting another skater with the intention of injuring her is absolutely not allowed. Whip It showed the sport as it was during the earliest years of the Derby revival, when it was more of a throwback to the Roller Derby of previous decades. We focus on athleticism and sportswomanship over beating the stuffing out of each other.

How much does it cost to participate?

While sponsorship and ticket sales cover some of the league expenses, monthly dues are what provide us with our practice space rental. In addition, skaters are responsible for their own equipment. Expect to pay $100-150 for a new pair of inexpensive skates, plus another $150-200 for a decent set of pads. A second set of wheels and bearings (because the ones that come with your skates aren't usually all that great) will run $150+. Top that off with $50 a month in dues and it can get expensive fast. eBay and Craigslist can be a big help, and be sure to ask an experienced skater for advice on what to buy. Several online retailers offer discounts for our league, and the staff at Foothill Skate Inn can order just about anything.

For those who want to be a part of the league, but do not wish to skate, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities available. Please contact Dara Devil for more information.

Our practices are closed to the general public, but please check our calendar for dates and times of practices, and email our coaches if you would like to schedule a visit.

March 13th - Saint Patrick's Day Parade

As we have done in years past, the Sac City Rollers will be out in support of this excellent family event. From the official announcement:

Old Sacramento, a 28-acre historic landmark and state historic park, will hold its 14th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade & Festival on Saturday, March 13, 2010. New to this year's event: a new date, a new time and a new parade route. The 2010 event will also include a Celtic festival in Waterfront Park (1000 Front Street) from noon - 6:00 p.m. featuring Irish music, dancing, food and a green beer garden. A number of vendors will be on hand to peddle their Celtic wares.

Always a free event, the parade steps off from a new location (2nd & L Streets) promptly at 1:00 p.m. and proceeds throughout the historic district.

Over 60 units, with more than 1,000 marchers, will delight the Irish and Irish-at-heart. Tartan-clad Highlanders, bagpipers, Irish dancers in elaborate Celtic costumes, school bands, military regiments, police and fire representatives, costumed marchers and many other cultural organizations will bring the luck of the Irish to the event.
